Risk Assessment

Evaluation Question 3

When producing an ad campaign audience feedback is extremely important, if a film no one is interested in goes out into the world no one will watch it, if there is a plot hole or something that doesn’t make sense in the film and it gets released it will get bad reviews and again no one will watch it, films need an audience so they can make money but they have to get the film right to get an audience so companies use audience feedback, they do this in a variety of different ways the most common being focus groups, focus groups work by small groups of the films target audience getting  a private screening of the film and then tell their opinions and feedback in which the company will either take on board and change or keep their film the same and hope for the best although these do cost money so they will listen often listen to the viewers. Woman in Black is a great example of a film that payed a lot of attention to their marketing campaign, they selected an actor who was huge at the time and had just starred in a successful movie franchise (Daniel Radcliffe, Harry Potter) they knew exactly how to bring audiences in and made around $127 billion worldwide when it was only estimated to make around $17 million.

The way in which I gathered feedback for our trailer was by getting our whole class to watch the trailer and write down two good points and two areas of improvement and how much they would pay to go and see it. This proved useful as we received a lot of advice in areas we needed to improve and what we should keep the same because it worked well, also because we had such as large media group we got a lot of different opinions and received almost 20 induvial slips.

Some of the most common constructive feedback we received from our trailer screening was; it needed to be more face-paced, music didn’t fit and was repetitive and the order of the shots didn’t make sense. We took all of this feedback on board and chopped loads of our shots down and added more in to make it more fast paced, changed the music from a piano which was on loop hence the repetitive comments and sorted out the order of our shots to add more of a narrative but not give too much away. The most common positive feedback was; interesting shots, good use of effects and blood, the news report at the start was good and made things clearer and the font used on the titles went well. Because of these comments we added more of our interesting shots, the audience particularly liked the shot of me falling over from my POV and we kept the font and news report the same.

When creating the magazine cover and poster I had a lot of help and advice from my class and tutor, especially when choosing which photographs to use as this could make or break the poster, when I had my first draft of my magazine a few different people told me it was too bare so I added more cover lines and with my poster I had a lot of comments on which font to use and how dark to make the masked villain.

Before we started filming the trailer we took on the advice from our questionnaire as the results told us that they would prefer a mixed up plot style which is why we didn’t give too much of the narrative away and although the questionnaire results told us that a supernatural film would be preferred we decided as a group to go with a slasher as it was what we personally preferred. Doing a questionnaire before proved useful as we had a solid ground to start from and we didn’t have to start from starch although I preferred doing the audience feedback after as you get more detailed feedback.

Here is the comments I received from our class feedback session-

Groups Individual Ideas

These are my groups individual ideas for our horror trailer, we didn't outright like one so we mixed them all together to create our trailer plot.

Me: A power cut at college or student's get locked in, Zombies or Vampire attack the college from the inside, plot is following a group of friends.

Charles: Haunted house, young couple move in, strange goings on, their dog dies, a fight for survival.

Andrew: Cat and mouse chase between a serial killer and his next victim.

Our final idea for our trailer is; two students stay after college to do work but things take a turn for the worst, a giant cat and mouse chase between a student and a mysterious figure- one year after a student was found dead at the college. A coincidence or not, this mysterious killer kills one of these students. The killer is being haunted by the ghost of the student he accidently killed and the story follows a fight for survival of the student.

Mood Board

This is my horror trailer mood board, the photographs on this are scenes from films and varied photographs that I think summarise and are like my horror film trailer. On my mood board I have used photographs of my college and made them darker to show that its late at night as the idea of my trailer is set at college over night, I have also used photographs of people hiding; behind blinds, in a library etc as that is a key element of my trailer. In the centre of my mood board I have one person studying and one person on their phone this is also another key element of my trailer as the student who is lacking off gets killed and the other has a bigger shot of surviving, slightly like the final girl theory. The photograph of the chained gates emphasises the fact that they are locked in college overnight and the phones with no signal are an actual scene in which the bad student gets killed and her phone has no signal so no one really knows. I have also included pictures of a janitor as that is who our killer is and the scenes from thriller films in which the main character is being hunted. The masked killers from the purge as my killer wears a mask and the picture of the person in someone’s ear as an idea I’m portraying is a ghost is telling the janitor to kill. All these pictures are sourced from Google.

Trailer Synopsis

A college caretaker accidentally killed a child in the past; the child is thought to still be missing. The child haunts the caretaker telling him to kill others.
2 students are staying behind after college to do work, one hard working, one slacking off. Both students get locked in college after hours when strange happenings occur - can both students survive?

Some key characters:
Our main characters follow the good vs evil idea as the girl is a bad person/student as she is on her phone when she should be studying and wastes time by going to the toilet to tweet and therefore is supposedly killed or captured, our other main character is shown studying and getting on with his work and has a better shot of surviving in the trailer as he is in a cat and mouse chase with the killer, perhaps he has a better shot of surviving as he is more ‘good’ then the other character.

Our killer is a janitor at the college and lives in the cleaner house on college’s site, we have the idea of a ghost influencing the caretakers killings, it happened 10 years previous to this situation and that is when the news report has been set, the name of the film is called ‘the mistake’ as the first death was a mistake and he is being haunted either by the dead student or a devil figure as he is a murderer in hiding.

Reeces

Our trailer is going to be filmed in college so all of our scenes will be in and around college, our main scenes will be in a classroom as our plot is set in a classroom, we have chosen our media room specifically as we think it’s a nice wide rooms to get some of the desired shots, another main location is the front of college as we will use this as our establishing shot and where our ‘news interview’ will take place, skills will also be used as it is where the main hunt scene where the killer is watching the main character and he knows it and is scared and paranoid, the girls toilets is another main scene as it will be used for when our other character gets taken.

Other locations used will be the library, as the bookshelves are good for hiding scenes, we will use the caretakers house for shots of an idea of where the killer lives, corridors for running scenes, the field for an extreme long shot of the killer to make the trailer a bit creepy and the canteen for more paranoid shots to add to the trailer.
